About

I have been teaching private lessons for over 12 years in the South Jersey and Philadelphia area. My experience includes teaching private music lessons to well over a hundred students of all ages on a multitude of instruments in many different musical genres and styles from rock to classical.

Many of my students have taken lessons for years, some of which have gone on to pursue careers in music.

My passion for music and love for teaching are apparent with every lesson that I teach. Each student is taught based on their own abilities, goals and aspirations – with an emphasis on creativity.

I try to make the learning process as enjoyable and interesting as possible so students can discover within themselves their own passion for music.

Instruments Taught

Voice

Students will first receive breathing and posture instruction as the two go together and are the most integral part of training somebody’s voice. Then, gradually, work will begin on repertoire and more advanced vocal techniques such as vibrato and range extension.

A strong focus is on ear training and working toward sight reading music. I've helped many students through the years improve their voice and pass auditions for shows and choirs.

Piano

Depending on the age and level of the student, different lessons are offered. I help young beginners use a series of fun, simple exercises that incorporate a basic understanding of music while also training their ears. I always start out of a beginner method book with the goal of getting students to be able to read music by slowly introducing the concepts in a fun and simple way.

More advanced students will learn all of the basic scales with different types of fingerings and begin to learn more advanced repertoire in any style they are interested in including classical, jazz, rock and pop.

Electric/Acoustic Guitar

Unlike other instruments guitar is music is written in two different ways, tabs which is an easy way to get started and standard notation which is the true way music is written. I teach both depending on the student but always encourage learning standard notation. I usually start with learning the basics through simple exercises and then progress to learning chords. From there I will progress to learning songs and more advanced techniques. I can teach guitar in many different styles including rock, jazz, fingerstyle folk, classical, and flamenco.

Electric Bass

For bass, reading music is key. Students need to read in a different clef than the guitar. My approach is to split up the lessons between learning to read music and basic techniques before moving on to learning songs and different styles of playing. Techniques like slap bass and creating bass lines from chord progressions are taught as the student advances.

Drums

Posture and hand position are the first things taught when teaching drummers. I begin with basic exercises so students can get a feel for the sticks using just a snare drum for beginners and eventually progressing to an entire set. Every student has to learn basic rudiments and have a basic understanding of how to read rhythms. The lesson is then split into learning techniques and different grooves/beats. Eventually we'll progress to learning entire song forms in which I will play with the student on various instruments so the student gets a sense of playing with others.

Saxophone

I always start with teaching how to make a good sound out of the instrument utilizing the proper embouchure and breath control. Students will use a method book to learn the basic concepts of reading music. Usually with the saxophone most students are interested in learning jazz or blues, so as the student advances, improvisation and jazz repertoire will start to be included into the lessons.

Flute

We will begin with your learning to get a good sound out of the instrument by working with the embouchure and then start to learn the basic fingerings. Students will begin with a method book and advance to other aspects of playing.

Clarinet

Like the other woodwind instruments getting a good sound is the biggest challenge. With the proper embouchure and breathing this challenge can be overcome. Then, I will teach the correct hand position and begin with a method book to learn the basic concepts of reading. Slowly we will begin work on more advanced repertoire.
